New Fall TV- The Bionic Woman

The big problem for me, and potential viewers eastside of the Atlantic, is the casting of Michelle Ryan as Jamie Summers. Michelle played Zoe Slater in Eastenders and like most characters in that show she was whiny, dumb and more than slightly screwed up. Could this actress shake off the shackles of Walford and re-invent herself in the US? Can we look at this remake of the iconic classic, without expecting someone to say "let's make a fresh start""or anticipating Barbara Windsor to pop up shouting "leave-ir'ow!!"?

Well, the answer is yes. Miss Ryan doesn't do too badly in this at all. While I didn't find her performance particularly endearing, it was not an irritant, and that was far more than I expected. As for the show itself, it passed the time and that was about it. The highlight is by far Katie Sackoff's performance as a batty bionic version 1, but I believe her appearances will be limited as she will be too busy playing Starbuck in Season 4 of Battlestar Galactica, and rightly so.

The premise of the show is perhaps what makes the pilot unsatisfying. It rushes along too quickly from the pre-bionic set-up, into the accident and subsequent superpowers, with little or no time focused on the emotional consequences of her physical overhaul. In 43 minutes she goes from lowly bartender to would-be assassin/vigilante with remarkable ease. Her lover/bionic surgeon is quite bland and dispensable. There are some menacing sub-characters who will possible provide some intrigue, but their purposes are, as yet, unclear

The pilot I saw will not be the one that is aired. There will be a few character changes and the controversial Isaiah Washington from Grey's Anatomy will be joining the series. I'll give it a few episodes but I'm not expecting a hit.

What a pity. I was a big fan of this show growing up and as an adult. My first dog was even called Bionica (in Spanish).
